If you're considering StandOut Connect, you probably want a straight answer to two questions: is it legitimate, and is it worth the cost. This page tries to answer both honestly, including who the program is not right for, so you can decide for yourself.

Is StandOut Connect legit?

Yes. StandOut Connect comes from the same team that built StandOutSearch, the largest free database of high school internships, which is used by around 100,000 students a year. It was founded in 2020 at the University of Chicago, received investment through the University of Chicago's Polsky Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation in 2022, and in 2024 its founder was recognized by Forbes 30 Under 30 for matching over 1,000 high school students with internships. The program is led by experienced professionals, not undergraduate students. Its program directors come from relevant fields such as high school education and venture capital, and every mentor is a founder or early team member at an innovative company.

Is StandOut Connect a scam?

No, and we understand why people ask. The criticism you'll see online is usually "never pay for an internship." That's good advice when a company charges you for a job, but that isn't what this is.

Two things matter here. First, every student earns their internship through real interviews. We help set up interviews and coach students, but a partner company has to genuinely want to mentor that student and choose to extend an offer. No one is simply placed. That's part of why the experience carries real weight with college admissions officers. Second, we stand behind the experience: any student who completes the program and isn't happy with it receives a full tuition refund. Making sure each student has a worthwhile experience is a point of integrity for us.

Is StandOut Connect worth it?

That depends on the student, and we'd rather you judge from real outcomes than take our word for it. In alumni surveys, past students reported:

  • 96% said the program helped them better understand their career goals.

  • 44% of 2024-2025 alumni were admitted to an Ivy League or U.S. News Top 20 university.

  • 80% received optional return offers to continue their internship.

Across cohorts, the program averages 4.3 out of 5 in student satisfaction. You can watch unscripted reviews from past students on our reviews page and read about us in Forbes and other outlets.

Why we started StandOut Connect

When we started StandOutSearch in 2020, internships had become an important part of the college admissions process. According to PRISM, a student-run consultancy at the University of Chicago, roughly three-quarters of students attending a U.S. News Top 50 university completed at least one internship while in high school. The problem was that most students could only find those opportunities through family connections. We set out to level the playing field for students who don't have those connections. We publish free resources for finding internships on your own, and we built StandOut Connect to give students access to mentors and companies founded by alumni of top schools and Fortune 500 companies.

Who StandOut Connect is, and isn't, a good fit for

We'd rather be upfront than have a student enroll and be disappointed.

It tends to be a strong fit for students who are driven, self-motivated, and genuinely curious about the professional world. Self-starters who are open to learning a range of skills usually get the most out of it.

It may not be the right fit in a couple of cases. The students who don't enjoy it are most often either doing it because a parent wanted them to rather than out of their own interest, or hoping for placements that aren't realistic for a high schooler. Because of legal age restrictions, we can't place students at hedge funds or in clinical medical settings, and we can't support highly specialized fields like quantum engineering, where companies generally need someone with more advanced training. If your heart is set on one of those specific environments, this probably isn't the right program for you, and we'd rather tell you now.

What it costs, and what that covers

StandOut Connect is tuition-based. The tuition covers a professional training program where students learn to build a resume and LinkedIn profile, interview, network, communicate professionally, use standard professional tools like Claude and HubSpot, and approach common internship tasks such as building a competition map or a marketing strategy. During training, we send each student's resume to the 500-plus partner companies in our network that match their interests and skills, and they interview until a company genuinely wants to work with them. The internship is earned through those interviews, not bought. Scholarships are available for U.S. students with family income under $100,000, and full scholarships through StandOut Scholars for low-income students.

We also publish several free resources to help students find internships on their own, including the StandOutSearch database and our cold outreach guide. If you're worried about the cost of the program, we genuinely encourage you to start with these free tools first. The paid program is there for students who want structured training, mentorship, and a guaranteed match, but you don't need to pay anything to begin your search.
